Man, 85, in £57K Lotto Con
10 Sep 2006
A man of 85 has been conned out of his £57,000 life savings in the biggest lottery scam in Britain.
The pensioner has been left badly shaken by conmen who told him he'd won millions in Spain's La Primativa lottery.
Since being contacted by letter in June he has been conned out of €85,000 euros, which he's unlikely to ever get back.
The thieves told the man, from Preston, Lancs, to send some money to claim his prize. He did and was then bombarded with letters and calls asking him for more cash for "tax purposes" and details to prove his identity.
Lancashire's chief trading standards officer Jim Potts said: "This is a classic case. It's the biggest amount we've seen taken off anyone. People should throw the letters away."
