Musicians Chuffed With Lottery Funding
02 Jan 2007
A musical project that will help to mark the opening of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link has received £10,000 of National Lottery cash.
The New London Orchestra has been given the grant for Newham Welcomes The World. Described as a community music project, it will run from 2007 to 2012 and will also mark the Olympics.
Manager Talia Lash said: "The idea is to create and perform music that celebrates the varied cultures and experience of Newham and also its potential."
Each year will see a community project. The first will result in a 45-minute piece that local people will perform with the orchestra at a free concert next summer.
It will be a chance for people to express their views and "create a musical narrative" about their area.
Other winners under the Awards For All scheme include Newham United Football Club who have been given £10,000. London Integration and Education Action have also received £10,000.
In Tower Hamlets, Crazy Talent were awarded £9,440. A total of £10,000 is going to the Bangladesh Football Association, and St Paul's Arts Trust have been given £7,300.
Community Accessible Riding Plus are in line for £9,170, and Bethnal Green Bangladeshi Community Association have been awarded £9,950.
